Marriage application

Applying for a civil marriage: the documents required, the ceremony and the fees.

Who can apply

Couples who have reached the age of 18 and have no legal impediment to marriage. Those who have reached 17 may marry with the consent of their legal representative, and those who have reached 16 may marry in exceptional circumstances with the permission of a judge.

Required documents

  • Identity booklet (nüfus cüzdanı) or Republic of Türkiye identity card (shown when you apply)
  • Marriage declaration (evlenme beyannamesi) — filled in and signed together when you apply
  • Health report (from your family doctor; the marriage cannot take place without it)
  • 6 passport-size photographs each (taken within the last six months)
  • A consent document, if required: for minors, the consent of the legal representative or a court decision
  • For women whose marriage has ended, if the 300-day waiting period has not expired, a court decision lifting the period

How it works

  1. The couple apply together to the Registry Directorate (Yazı İşleri), Marriage Registry.
  2. If the documents are complete, the marriage file is prepared and a date is given for the ceremony.
  3. The ceremony takes place on the set day and at the set time in the wedding hall or at a chosen place within the Municipality’s boundaries; at the end of the ceremony the family booklet (aile cüzdanı) is handed over.

Good to know

  • A civil registry extract and a certificate of residence are not requested; the civil registry record is obtained from the Identity Sharing System (Kimlik Paylaşımı Sistemi).
  • Under a 2020 arrangement by the Ministry of the Interior, you can apply to any marriage registry regardless of your place of residence.
  • Thalassaemia (Mediterranean anaemia) screening is carried out as part of the health report.
  • If the wedding hall or another ceremony venue is to be used, availability must be confirmed in advance: Wedding hall and ceremony venues.
  • If one of the parties is a foreign national: Marriage of foreign nationals.
